The Project
We were approached to create a launch video for a collaboration of a cannabis company and Co.Lab who were coming together to support local artists in their campaign of their new and legal cannabis stores which were just starting to pop up.
The Challenge
With cannabis just becoming legal, regulations were pretty strict/rushed and not really hashed out. This went over both the client and I’s head for the first draft as I had collected a handful of friends and artists who were more than perfect for the aesthetic the client had initially asked for which was a plethora of abstract and playful boards that would come together nicely for the brand. We quickly realized from the clients lawyers that we had to steer very clear of anything that was seen as “too young and playful” as this could be seen as advertising to children (of course). With today’s adults and creatives, this playful “childlike” aesthetic is as much geared to them today as ever, almost as if we are taking our innocence back, but with such a new and hot topic of the legalization of weed it made sense that this wasn’t the time to push such an agenda.
First Drafts
Sean Richman
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Noam Sussman
I asked my buddy Noam who’s been in the animation industry for several years now to go at this board with whatever wackiness he cared to bring. I’ve always loved his style of pure insanity and class. Visit this man’s site and check out the intriguing world of Noam.
Samone Murphy
Another artist who’d always caught my eye was willing and able to do one of the other boards on the table. Her strengths lie in combining the textural mediums used in her years of being an illustrator with refined detail orientation learned from being a graphic designer. Sadly this was one of the boards that was deemed too playful for the cut but I still wanted to animate it and see it come alive. Check out her amazing work with the button below!
Axel Kinnear

Katherine Diemert
Katherine is one of those jack of all trades master of all. Her boards were basically the only ones that fit the “legal” boundaries of what we were able to continue forward with. We basically took this grittiness and rolled with it for the 2nd draft. Check out this artists site and see all the styles and mixed martial media arts she can do!
Alex Azalea Jin
As a frequent collaborator with Chop Haus, Alex is always a shoe in when it comes to these types of projects where “initially” anything goes and she brings everything to the table. Sadly this was another board on the list who’s dreamlike creativity was too "playful” for this hot topic of legality. Be sure to check out her world below!
Marianne Mastrofini
Another artist who’s been in the graphic design world for years. Marianne’s illustrative style is always treat to see when she flex’s that muscle. Check out some of her work below!
